It could well be that there was originally a lot more gasoline on the floor and the puddle was just the remains after most of the leak had evaporated. The smell of gasoline in the garage was overpowering and a mechanic who drove me home after I took the car to a repair shop checked out the puddle and verified that it was gasoline. Thanks, but the fluid was definitely gasoline. I've had this same problem, I had to pull the gas tank out and replaced the gasket and while I was there I replaced the fuel pump too. If this gasket is bad then the tank will leak when it's full but it won't leak if it 3/4 full. If you are finding fluid on your garage floor that has been there for several hours, it can't be gas.Īs far as the leak is concerned, most fuel pumps are accessed from the top of the tank and to seal it there is a gasket around 5 or 6 inch in diameter sealing plate. Thanks so much in advance.įirst off, gasoline evaporates fair quick. I wonder if anyone on this forum has had any personal experience with a situation like this. I still love my Jeep - it's 20 years old and things are bound to wear out - but I'm going to be checking the garage for fumes regularly from now on. So that's what I'm going to do - just fill it 1/2 or 3/4 of the way from now on. Sometimes the repair shops couldnt find the leaks so the owners "fixed" their problem by just not filling the tanks totally full anymore. I googled "1998 Jeep Cherokee gas leak after filling tank" and found that other owners have had this problem. I got the car back this morning and there's been no more gas leaking. The shop couldnt find a gas leak, although the repairman saw the huge pool of gasoline on my garage floor when he drove me home. I drove to the repair shop down the street yesterday morning. I looked under my car and, sure enough, there was at least a full cup of gasoline on the floor right underneath my tank. That night I went into the garage and was overwhelmed by the smell of gasoline fumes. I then drove straight home (6 blocks) and parked the car in the garage. I didnt top the tank off or overfill it - and the temperature outside, while hot, was certainly cooler than it's been many other times when I've filled the tank over the years. I went to the same gas station that I've used for the past 15 years. I filled my tank up the day before yesterday. My 1998 Jeep Cherokee Sport has been a great car for 20 years but I have a problem now that's a bit concerning.
